We have had a pretty incredible 3 month run of PR filled Saturdays and today was no different.  Big Shane PR'd his deadlift at 556 moving him just 44 lbs from a major milestone.  Ry PR'd both his front squat at 305 (just missed 315) and his deadlift at 386.  RJ pr'd his sumo deadlift this week at 386 and his conventional deadlift last week came in at 365..both came easily and with some technique work he will soon hit 400 on both.  Tom also PR'd his deadlift today at 300.  I could not be more proud of the hard work and success that our crew has put in and achieved.  We all have similar yet different goals but one thing remains the same, the success of the group as a whole will forever reign as priority #1...nobody gets left behind.

What a day...not many know this but about 18 mos ago I was completely demolished mentally because of the way I was programming for myself.  I wanted 600 on the deadlift so badly that I was overtraining myself severely.  What ended up happening was a severe case of CNS fatigue, mental lapses, and a fear of the deadlift.  I've been able to right the ship this year.  I have adjusted my training to best suit me, and have seen awesome gains. I set a goal for myself to hit 700 by the end of 2011 and today was my day.  This lift meant more than any other i've achieved so far due to the relationship that we have..haha.  It's one of love and hate!  I still have not overcome my fear of the deadlift, but I feel comfortable enough in my approach to it in training that I will continue to see gains.

What a day. I felt good but the final sets were really heavy. I'm happy about the 708 but it moved really slowly at lockout looking at the vid. We got a ton of work in today which was much needed. The hanging KB's added a much larger twist than I anticipated (good thing). Was a great day, with a full crew, and strong work all around.

Westside CF Powerlifting Seminar

Lindsay and I have spoken at length about the importance of power and strength in any training program. Regardless of the goals of the individual athlete, strength will always play some role in a sound program. We train to be the best and to attain the best opinions and knowledge out there. Because of this we are bringing the best to Utah. We will be hosting a Powerlifting seminar taught by Laura Phelps Sweatt of Westside Barbell. If you have not heard of Louie Simmons and Westside, you don't know training. Westside is the pinnacle of the powerlifting world, and Laura will be sharing their methods at this course.

Over the many years that Louie has been involved in Powerlifting, he has gained a vast amount of knowledge on how to produce strength. Through experience, the percent training method, conjugate training method, dynamic training method, maximum effort method, lifting techniques, raising work capacity, rehabilitation and restoration, and reactive and contrast method have become his area of expertise. It is this knowledge and expertise that has lead to the production of 25 World and National champions, 27 lifters who have totaled over 2000 lbs and a world record in the 400m dash by Butch Reynolds. Also, Louie's methods of training have resulted in thirty-three 550lb benchers, eighteen 600lb benchers, and five 700lb benchers. Also to his credit are twenty-eight 800lb plus squatters, ten 900lb plus squatters, and three 1000lb plus squatters.

Laura Phelps Sweatt is a professional powerlifter having broken world records 17 times in her three year career. She currently has the highest total of all-time by formula, marking her the strongest female powerlifter in history. Most recently, she totaled 1736lbs with a 716lb squat, 485lb bench press, and 534lb deadlift.

You may be wondering why the application of methods used by world record powerlifters applies to you, and as I said, strength will always be the cornerstone of a sound training program.  Many have lost sight of this, and we want to make sure we not only train like the best, but offer the best at our gym.

Football Trainer Course

We got him! The legend himself, John Welbourn will be coming to Ogden, Utah for a certification at Crossfit The Club May 26, 2012. John was the creator of CrossFit Football in 2008. He was drafted with the 97th pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. He went on to be a starter for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2003, appearing in 3 NFC Championship games, and for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2004-2007. In 2008, he played with the New England Patriots until an injury ended his season early.

This is the first Football Training Course that Utah has ever seen and we expect it to be huge! As many know, I have known John for some time now and was able to meet him face to face in Southern California earlier this month. We had a good time and had some awesome conversations relating to training. He was kind enough to contact Lindsay and I afterwards to see if we would like to host a certification. This is a very rare opportunity to meet John and to learn the methods that he utilizes to train some of the most elite athletes in the world.

Sometimes injuries are what we need to continue perfecting form and improving ourselves. Will get in the shirt again on Monday and hope to continue progress.

10/20 Power Training; DE Upper

1A) DE Bench Press 8x3 @ 185lbs + Light Short Bands
2A) Decline Bench Press 3x10 @ 275
3A) T-Bar Rows 3x10 to 7 plates
3B) Elbows Out Tri Ext 3x10 to 70lbs

*Finally a day where I felt I am making some progress. The pec was still sore but I could handle the weight light years easier than last week. A long warmup and good stretching is always key. Also, the decline bench press was a rude awakening today. I've not done this exercise in probably 3 years but will be easing them into my training in the future. Sad I know..

*I have narrowed the pain in my upper chest to something in my neck. The pec held up today but the pain in my neck is pretty bad. Bad thing is, the heavier the weight, the more it hurts. I am also experiencing some strength loss. Doctors appt. tomorrow.  Going to have to man up. This is ridiculous.

SPF SoCal Open and..Update! ..i'm back.

So i've been away from the web for some time now.  The last several weeks have been crazy.  As many know, I competed in Southern California on October 2nd.  The weeks leading up to that meet were humbling to say the least.  I spent a lot of time learning my squat suit as well as my bench shirt.  I was physically and emotionally exhausted at the end of my training cycle.  I had a small scare in the final week of my training where I could not physically hit depth in the squat with the suit on and straps up.  A friend of mine, Brandon Lilly, introduced to me by John Welbourn, spent some time with me on the phone reviewing videos and everything ended up great at the meet.  I ended up squatting 735, benching 575, and deadlifting 635.  I had goals to hit 790 in the squat and bench over 600 but that wasn't in the cards.  I was red lighted on my second squat attempt at 710 for depth so I scaled my third attempt back.  My 610 bench attempt went well until the final 3 inches of the lockout when something popped in my pec.  It was distracting and my butt came off the bench for a red light. My total was good enough for Best Lifter at the meet and an Elite total.

I am now rested and just finished my first week of training after the meet...i'm already out of shape!  I'm back in the pursuit of a 2000 lb total and hope to achieve that soon.  My pec is not cooperating like I had hoped but I am trying to be patient and give it time.  I am going to try to compete at the USPA World Championships in Las Vegas on December 3rd with my good friends Ed Kinsey and Jason Gibson.  Time will tell how my pec is going to respond jumping back into the rigorous training again so soon. It would be very special to me if I could make that meet with such knowledgeable, strong and good people.

We are back to training clients at the Strength Warehouse and I have a goal to post pictures and updates like I used to. I have been corresponding with my good friend Lindsay Hassell at Crossfit The Club in the Ogden Athletic club.  We have decided to merge and I will be taking my equipment up to his place around the first of the year, maybe even later.  And no, I am not becoming a crossfitter!  I am going to be training power and strength athletes and whoever wants to get stronger.  I will also help Lindsay with fitness/crossfit clients when he needs me.

It's good to be back in the swing of things and thank you to all whom are out there listening!  Thanks for taking the time for the long read..

Best wishes, and thanks for the support.

**Good day today overall. My left shoulder and long head of tricep were still tight so I stayed light again just to be safe. I also got some good accessory work in, which I have been unable to do for the past few weeks.

**Also, a huge shout out and good wishes to my brothers at PSM Barbell. Some of them are heading out today and tomorrow for the AWPC World Championships. Jason Gibson, Jordan Gibson, Ed Kinsey, Mick Benales, Nick Lenhart, Mitch McCarthy, Butch Bills, Kurt Larsen, and Tyler Nelson are some of the best people i've met in all my years of training and I know they will make some serious noise up there. Some state records will be broken yet again, and hopefully some world records by a select few.

**This was all we had time for again this week but it was certainly plently. We hoped to drag sled as well so possibly tomorrow.  Big Shane had a huge day today with a squat of 506x2 and a bit of help at the top, and also a huge deadlift of 506x3! Nice work brother!

The weight felt better on my back this week and I feel better about my CNS getting ramped up for circa max next week. I also felt more comfortable about my depth overall today. Lastly, working toward establishing an opener with straps up will be priority over the next two weeks. Optimal sleep just isn't in the cards right now so I am doing the best I can with lunch break cat naps and trying to get to bed as early as possible. Hopefully everything comes together in the end.
